9 days on the loom

Both the warp and the weft are tie-dyed before a single thread is woven, so the diamonds only appear when the two line up on the loom. The soft edges are the mark of the hand, not a flaw.

How a double ikat is made

The pattern is dyed into the thread before the loom is even set up.

Lakshmi’s throw took nine days to weave. The tying and dyeing that came before took her family three weeks.

  1. 4 daysMarkingThe diamond is drawn onto the stretched warp and weft bundles with charcoal, thread by thread.
  2. 9 daysTyingEvery section that must stay undyed is bound tight with strips of rubber, by hand.
  3. 6 daysDyeingIndigo first, then madder, then yellow, untying and re-tying between each colour.
  4. 2 daysSetting the warp4,250 warp ends are lined up by eye so the warp pattern sits where the weft will meet it.
  5. 9 daysWeavingEach pick is nudged into place before beating. A few threads off, and the diamond blurs. A little blur is the point.
